At my company we solved this problem by loading HTML documents directly in the OS-default Web browser. This can be done in Java, there is no need to write any native code. Simply load the browser in a separate Windows process. For Unix, you may leave the user choose the location of the browser executable.

We developed an HTML plug-in as well, but this solution took too much time and resources, and the result was not satisfactory.
