Readers trip over it. One trips over one. It's very stilted and archaic.
I'm surprised that no one has yet brought up "one". At one time, one
could find many uses for that word. If one looks back in history, as
long as one is talking about going back to 15th century English, one
could bring it back, couldn't one? Other languages have gender-neutral
words, which English seems to have dropped.
