Also, if you intend to look for pure writing jobs, knowing illustrator
does not significantly enhance your chances of landing one. If you had
spent the time, say, learning a new development in your field of
expertise, it might have improved your employability by a lot more.

Ahhh, the old "ignorance is an asset" argument. Knowledge is always useful.
There is no reason to turn your back on expertise simply because it doesn't
interest you.

you're completely misrepresenting what I said. If you reread the paragraph you quoted, you'll notice that:

- I actually argued FOR learning something.

- I didn't mention the like or dislike of a topic as a criterion for deciding to learn about it.

Both Beth and me argued that, in deciding WHAT to learn (not IF to learn), you should make sure that you benefit (in the long run), not just your current employer. (That is: not JUST your current employer.)

Please do not twist my arguments into straw arguments just so that you can easier 'be right'.
