One way would be to use the Alton Brown approach (I can't remember the name of the cookbook).
He lists Hardware (all the implements, pots, pans, etc.).
Then he lists Software (all the cooking ingredients).
Then come the preparation instructions with comments on why each step is done the way he describes it -- best practices.
