Don't forget, anything "new in the universe" has not yet been exposed to the
rigors of evolution, and thus, hasn't demonstrated it's ability to survive
in the real world. Just because it's new and state of the art doesn't mean
it's going to survive. After all, as Darwin famously said: "Don't bother
trying to make something foolproof. Nature will simply evolve a better
fool."

The key word here is "value". As in economics, something becomes valuable
when it's in short supply. Common sense is valuable precisely because it's
so rare. It's also why we techwhirlers can earn a decent wage: we're selling
a commodity that everyone wants and so few people have.
