I've only encountered resistance in three areas:

1. Being mistaken for, or treated as, an employee.
This mistake benefited me, once. For two months with one client, I was allowed a session with the massage therapist who came in once a week. Then someone noted that the benefit was for employees only, but it was enjoyable while it lasted. Still, maybe all was for the best - keeping awake after the session was sometimes difficult.

2. Not wanting to take a perm. position with a company. A couple of places found it really odd that I was happier as an hourly freelancer.

My motto: The only difference between a consultant and a full-time employee is that, as a consultant, I know when my employment will end, and can prepare for it.

But I've found much the same thing. The reaction is especially likely at a company that is concerned with team-building. My reluctance to join the team has sometimes been seen as negative and anti-company.
