I agree with those who have stated that knowledge of
html, and graphics programs are valuable to a tech
writer.
For my current employer I not only write and design
their training manuals, but I do their web site,
quarterly newsletter and their database
administration. Most of the computer skills I have and
knowledge of the programs I use were either
self-taught or gained through college night school
courses.
When my employer decided they need a web site and
quarterly newsletter, I was able to have their first
site up and running, and several sample newsletter
layouts designed within two weeks. When they needed a
database designed to track their monthly revenues
recieved and its disbursement to nearly 30 locations
nation-wide, they approached me. I got that project up
within six weeks. They were so pleased with all I had
done that they boosted my salary by $15,000!
So, it pays to be able to wear a few other hats.
My 2 cents, Barbara.
