I'm tempted to say I've never had that happen *that
way* but I can't letmyself commit to that. However,
if a style button doesn't work, it's usually because
the style doesn't exist in that document, or in any
template it's attached to. When that happens (and god
knows, it does) check the Styles list to see if it's
available. If not, you need to go to the Organizer
and haul it in from somewhere else, then apply it.
