When I started freelancing (the first time <g>), a programmer friend gave me some excellent advice. He told me to pay the fee to the county to register a "Doing Business As" name (DBA). That way, even on a chronological resume, I can collect all those little projects under one date range:

1986-2000 MasterWork Consulting
Brief description of the kinds of projects and
industries I've worked with.

Recent projects:
*Company X - appropriate details
*Company Y - appropriate details
*Multinational Megacorp - appropriate details

Client references available on request.
