This thread reminds me of books I've read by Deborah Tannen: "Talking
from 9 to 5," for example. Men and women tend to have different
conversation patterns. Men frequently interrupt one another, and don't
consider that rude. Women tend to apologize, even when we're right. What
that means is that women need to change our ways of speaking in order
not to be ignored and sneezed at by men, and men need to try to
recognize and avoid rude behavior. It's interesting to read the
responses, in light of Deborah Tannen's research. And I agree with Kim,
being "cute" definitely affects how a man listens (or not) to a woman.
I've been tall all my life and almost never am accused of being "cute,"
which has certainly affected my behavior, the way others perceive what I
say, and how they react to me.

Personally, I don't see that what she said was rude. It sounded mostly
factual, expressed her own emotions without being accusative (that is,
if John faithfully reported her words). If she'd said "you guys are
idiots," then OK, that's going a bit far. But--"leave me alone"--?!
