I agree it might feel awkward to ask, but how can you not if you are
interested.

In my last phone interview, I asked for the job and also for an
in-person interview. I was told that they'd get back to me as they had
several candidates to interview for the position. I expect that's the
majority response. Indeed, even if I were interested in a candidate to
the point of wanting to hire him, I'd not offer the job over the phone
and on-the-spot--I'd delay so I could review the interview and consider
things to be sure.
