I'm glad you all have gone home! No posts for a couple of hours, and here I am
with a question.

I've been asked how much it would cost to document a company's product. The
product is a portal -- an intranet/extranet set of applications for
businesses.

I think that I need to see the product up close before I make a bid. Is there
any reason why I should not say so? I'm planning on writing this to the
company:

<beginning of draft response>
I create estimates of the cost of documenting a product on the following main
factors:

- Size of the product
- Complexity of tasks involved in using the product
- Time required for me to study independently and/or be trained on the product
- Quantity of documentation required

Anything I would say right now would only be a guess, unfortunately. I would
have to see the product, use it, and then create an estimate.
<end of draft response>

The company also asked about my doing a review of its Web site, so I've opened
the draft response with comments about that and I have not reproduced them
here.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you may have and wish to share with
me. I am salivating at the prospect of getting out of the sweatshop that I am
in at my nonwriting job.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!
