and recipes are very old. we certainly had recipes before computers...
...transistors...
...radio...
...electricity...
...formalised writing?

Long before I started calling myself a technical writer, I used a set of well-written vs. poorly-written recipes for the same dishes to illustrate a brief training session for new technicians on how to write up experiments in their lab notebooks. From then on, I've had a recurring dream about a Neanderthal elder using cave paintings to teach young initiates how to prepare a ritual dinner: "First, catch something that looks like this...."
