I know of another example of self-publishing leading to a best seller. I live in a small village whose local hero is Tom Grace, author of popular techno-thrillers (_Spyder Web_, _Quantum Web_). Grace self-published _Spyder Web_ and then it was picked up by Warner. He now has a 3 book deal with Warner for large money.

Self-publishing is something different, and there is the example of this
Yale professor who published himself a book about the history of graphs, and it became a bestseller. I can't find the reference for this book, I've seen
it about 17 years ago, and it really was a beautiful and interesting book.
