In general terms, the documentation lifecycle is the path that documents must take while a product or system or such is being developed.

We currently have four major categories in our lifecyle: Requirements, Construction, Testing, Maintenance. Each category is broken into smaller parts, and a specific document marks the end of each part.

A good book to read is "Software Requirements" by Karl Wiegers. It is available on amazon.com.
