I managed to make the phantom equation go away, but I was never sure what
caused it or on what plane it existed. If I deleted the paragraphs around
it, it would disappear until the next time I redrew the page (Ctrl-L or by
changing page). I deleted all paragraphs from the file, but it continued to
haunt page 9. I guess it inhabited the physical page but not the flow, but
I'm not sure how it got there.

I got rid of it by creating a new file & cutting & pasting my text into it.
