I am writing to invite you to participate in a study about scientific
and technical dictionaries. As part of my graduate work leading to the
MA in English with a Concentration in Scientific and Technical
Communication in the Department of English at Bowling Green State
University, Bowling Green, OH, USA, I am trying to find out what
dictionaries are used by technical communicators, how they are used, and
how they can be improved. The current literature apparently does not
contain any information about studies that consider Internet
dictionaries used by technical communicators; thus, this study is
innovative and will become part of my thesis.

There are several advantages of participation in this study for you.
First, completing the questionnaire can help you to enhance your use of
dictionaries by suggesting new criteria to use as you select new
dictionaries, suggesting new purposes for the dictionaries you currently
use, or, perhaps, just suggesting types of information which
dictionaries can offer. Second, copies of the results of the research
will be sent to you upon your request; please contact me if you are
interested in getting the results.

To participate in the study, you will need to fill out and submit a
"Dictionaries in Technical Communication" questionnaire, located at the
URL found at the end of this letter. It is estimated your participation
will take approximately fifteen minutes. The information you provide on
this questionnaire will remain confidential. The questionnaire software
is designed so that the questionnaire will be submitted without any
personal information. Your participation in this study is completely
voluntary.

If you have any questions or comments concerning this study, you can
contact Olga Menagarishvili at (419) 372-7242, olgamen -at- bgnet -dot- bgsu -dot- edu or
William Coggin at (419) 372-7552, bcoggin -at- bgnet -dot- bgsu -dot- edu -dot- You may also
contact the Chair, Human Subjects Review Board, Bowling Green State
University, (419) 372-7716, hsrb -at- bgnet -dot- bgsu -dot- edu if you have questions
regarding the conduct of this study or about your rights as a research
participant. By completing and submitting the questionnaire you are
indicating your consent to participate in the study.

To complete the "Dictionaries in Technical Communication" questionnaire,
