Well, if you really want to get into the finer points of the
differences/similarities between editing and proofreading, see if you can
find a copy of Mary Fran Buehler's _Levels of Edit_. It's an old book and
may be out of print, but in it, Mary Fran (an editor at the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory) identified NINE levels of editing.

>From a practical standpoint, I would second Cheryl Magadieu's recommendation
of Judy Tarutz' book, _Technical Editing_. I don't always agree with Judy,
but I respect her judgment and actually enjoyed reading her book. She
leavens the editing information with triage tips and stories illustrating
her points.
