I thought it was just an adverb clause that begins with a subordinate
conjunction....

I use the Plain English Handbook, mainly because most of their suggestions
sound right. They recommend using the comma unless the adverb clause is
very short and cannot be misread. I like that last part. I know folks who
can misread a Stop sign.

Like John P. said, listen to your mom... and there's nothing wrong with
dissecting the New Yorker's grammar as a hobby.
