To Chris Grant's many comments:
mmmm, what you say makes a great deal of sense and I agree with it......you don't earn the respect you don't get the respect. I think I've met a couple of the "typist" technical writers. I also agree that it comes down to image. If you behave as XXXXX or you're perceived as XXXXX then you will be treated as XXXXX. I think our department is only now overcoming some "image" problems from several years ago (related staff no longer here).
My original post, however, was wondering if you, as technical writers, get respect from other departments but not from dev. In other words, the rest of the company understands your contributions, but development doesn't. Or, if certain departments see your worth and others don't (whether that perception is deserved or not).
