I *like* being a technical writer. I'm not particularly interested in
becoming a manager; unless I had spectacularly competent underlings, I
think I would have trouble backing off and letting them do things their
way.
If it's just me (the writer) and a document, I can usually make that
document turn out precisely the way I want. On the other hand, if it
were me (as a manager) and a writer and the document, the only way I
could make that doc turn out the way I want might be to steamroll the
writer. I'd rather just work with the document myself and take a
craftsman's pride in the results.
<sigh> I hope I never change my mind, since these words will lurk in the
archives for all eternity.
This is not to say I want to be a peon, though. I'm not keen on being
yoked to a dozen other writers in some big tech pubs stable and driven
by someone ELSE'S vision. I'm much happier working solo. (Or the
equivalent. In my current job there's one other writer; we divvy up the
work. It's a nice arrangement. On any given document I can function as a
"solo writer" but on the other side of the cubicle wall there's another
writer to chat/commiserate/brainstorm with.)
