I think it also depends on the existing level of dynfunction in the
workplace. If lots of things are broken, then there are lots of ways to get
noticed by fixing them. OTOH, if things are running smoothly, it's
difficult to garner attention for doing something well.
Still, I tend to agree with the implication that hard work doesn't always
pay off. When I graduated college 5 or 6 years ago, I was convinced that
I'd land jobs and positions through hard work and results that were
demonstrably superior to my fellow job applicants or co-workers. Now today,
I realize that I'm where I am largely through being in the right place at
the right time, getting noticed by the right folks, or (gasp!) being the
favorable topic of discussion between a former and future boss while they
got drunk at a company Christmas party. :) Whatever works, I guess.
I probably shouldn't undermine the importance of working hard though: had I
not been overachieving, it's likely I _wouldn't_ have been in the right
place at the right time, _wouldn't_ have been noticed by the right folks, or
would be the _unfavorable_ topic of dicussion between the two bosses. It's
just seems that hard work doesn't often DIRECTLY result in recognition and
reward.
