Bonnie:

As you say, on the resume, it's simply a waste of time to list *every* incarnation of the company. Just list the company as you knew it and include a simple indication of the change (for example, as I do: Dobbs International Services, Inc (Now Gate Gourmet)).

However, I think you miss a huge point here: most companies don't follow up on information in the resume itself until *after* the interview/job offer. They don't background on all resumes received (too expensive), and they don't toss one just because they find a company name that they don't recognize.

It's been my experience that most companies have the candidate complete an application, sign a background check approval, et cetera. Yes, the resume is often attached to keep from wasting a lot time filling out the forms (I've also seen people attach a special contact sheet containing all this information in addition to the resume, since most resumes I've seen *don't* include this data, listing only the company, location, dates of services, and duties performed).

Whatever the case, the application is where you should ensure that the company, address, phone number, and other such data is correct. It also provides the opportunity to clarify special situations.

So I vote not to worry too much about the citation, but to concentrate on the heart of the resume - the skills and experience you can bring to the company.

Jeff
