I address this problem by including the URL of the current incarnation
of the defunct company, if I can find one. It's never been much of a
problem, anyway. I'm in Silicon Valley, and many of the defunct
companies I worked for are well-known in their part of the industry,
even if they've been gone for years. SuperMac, for instance. Just to
make sure, in interviews, I'm careful to provide anecdotes about any
company that draws an interviewer's attention, so that s/he realizes I
was really there.
