TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Sounds like the solution is political rather than technical.
If it seems expedient to do so, find the marketing guru that the new
president has been talking with. Ask his/her advice, noting that the
President suggested that s/he had some idea of a great tool, other than PPT,
for making presentations. S/he may say that it IS PPT, in which case, you
ask whether he knows of someone who can show you one of these non-linear
presentations.
Sometimes, what they say, what they know, and what's real are all different
things.
By talking nicely (asking advice) to the marketeer, you not only open a
door, but you also give him/her a chance to show off. And you might save
yourself some work. At least you could go to the prexy and say, "So-and-so
thinks that <name of tool> is the way to go. If we use the same tool as
Marketing, in this case, we could [don't gag!] leverage our synergies
between marketing and tech pubs" (or some such thing).
Just a thought, but IME, people who send others off on quests like this
often already have in mind the answer that they want, and you have to figure
out what it is. Allies never hurt.
Cynically,
Marguerite
