The opposing opinion is correct. If the editor is the manager, and the
manager says to use "you," then that's the answer. It's dangerous for
writers to start down the path of ingoring the directives of their bosses.
Inevitably something more dangerous than this example will slip through if
the manager's requests aren't followed. If I was the manager in this case I
would reprimand the writer for being insubordinate.
This trumps whether "you" or "the user" is correct, but personally in that
case I would use "you." It's more direct, it's simpler, and as someone else
said, support folks are "you" too.
