Anyone know of a tutorial for building a FrameMaker 7.0 XML appli cation file?
Subject:Anyone know of a tutorial for building a FrameMaker 7.0 XML appli cation file? From:"TEA Lanham, Kevin" <Klanham -at- aus -dot- telusa -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 16 Oct 2002 13:05:55 -0500
We are trying to get from XML out to paper. We've tried XSL-FO, but FOP
doesn't do widows and orphans very well. Now we're going back to try Frame
again for paper publishing.
The problem is that building a Frame "application" seems to be a complex
task and there are 1100+ pages of documentation to wade through. It seems
ironic to me that as the creators of instructions that the manual is not
always our first choice for solving task problems. Hmmm. But that's another
discussion. I actually have read a lot of the Developers Guide already, and
I've tried to do it. But I'm running into problems.
Does anyone know of a web tutorial with a sample DTD and sample XML file
that walks you through building the EDD, and read write rules for Frame 7.0?
Actually any REAL examples would be great. The Adobe documentation deals
more with description of theory than walking through examples that go from
simple to more complex. Maybe their goal is to sell training instead of
clearly explain how to use the product.
Going from XML to XHTML is no big deal with XSLT. It is getting to paper
that is still difficult. Our company already has many Frame installations so
other tools are less likely to win (unless they are low cost or free). This
is not so much a tools-choice question as much as a how-to question with a
specific tool.
In an ideal world we'd hire consultants to help out, but the reality is that
our DTD evolves and we need to know how to do some of this setup stuff
in-house. Authoring system setup is yet another thing to distract from
writing. So if we've got to slug through it, I thought it would be nice if
someone else just finished this process and wrote about their exciting time
with Adobe's unique view of markup languages.
Thanks,
Kevin
