Your observation, IMO, is spot-on. In technical terms <g>,
Andrew presents himself as a theory x manager in a largely
theory y industry. If he's ever heard of Maslow's Hierarchy
of Needs, he apparently dismissed it as sheer drivel. ;-)

I found a very interesting page that succinctly explains the
difference at:
http://www.businessballs.com/mcgregor.htm

also see:
http://www.hcc.hawaii.edu/intranet/committees/FacDevCom/guidebk/teachtip/mas low.htm

I have no proof and have found no studies, but I've often
thought that a person's management style is largely based
on that person's own values and that, in general, people
assume that other's share their values and views. So,
theory y managers are people who recognize their own
hierarchy of needs while theory x managers are people who
are themselves only motivated by paycheck and intimidation.
I could, of course, be wrong on this.

There was some interesting work being done in the 60s.

As always, Andrew shows his complete lack of respect for his own profession and for the other technical writers out there.

I'm not diminishing his experience... but to make the sweeping generalization that most TW's are unwilling to learn their field is simply incorrect.

Of course, this completely goes against Andrew's assumption that everyone is lazy... all they want is a paycheck, and they'll take the path of least resistance to get it.

Unfortunately, Andrew does not realize that *most* people ...are hard-working, conscientious people who do what is necessary to get the job done...
