Not quite sure what you're saying here.

If they attended your program willingly,
then the audience was already self-selected
for at least *some* level of interest/motivation
to learn.

If you had them there by the use or threat
of force, or extortion ("Either you attend Cindy's
reading classes, or we'll cut off your welfare and
revoke your mother's parole..."), then there
may have been some patience, but not much
respect involved.

I'm sure the actual scenario was some third
option, and knowing it would clarify/validate
what you said, above.
