John,

I know exactly how you feel, even after 16 years in this profession. You're finished when you run out of time,
but there's always something you'd have liked to have done better, or just differently. I think it's just a matter
of not getting disillusioned and consoling yourself with the thought that as the years go by "the best you can
do" keeps getting better.

The following quote from Samuel Beckett was sort of my touchstone during my years as a contractor ...

"To know that you can do better next time, unrecognizably better, and that there is no next time, and that it is
a blessing that there is not, there is a thought to be going on with."

Simon.

Software development consists mostly of selecting
the correct wrench to pound in the right screw.
