Re: taking too long
How do you handle "What's taking so long?"...
I have spent six months writing five hundred pages from scratch...
I would respond that an average tech writer can produce a page in about 2 hours (including research, rewriting, and formatting).
Each screen shot should take about 20 minutes (including call-outs).
So, this comes out to about 1200 hours of work. Assuming you work 7.5 hours a day (they do give you breaks, don't they?), this is a minumum of 30 weeks of work. If any screen shots or information changes during this period, tack on a little more time.
Do you have any other duties? As a tech writer, I have often been called in to service writing error messages or other documents. This all adds to the mix as well.
Perhaps your boss just needs education as to how a technical writer performs his or her work.
