I attended a session in London last week at which Steve Ballmer spoke. He
talked on this issue, among other things. A key point he made about security
was that most attacks come *after* a security fix has been published. How
come? The hackers examine the patch and see what vulnerability it is fixing,
and then attack that vulnerability, on the basis that not everyone will have
applied the patch yet. And it works. Half the people hit by Code Red hadn't
installed the necessary patch in time for Nimda, even though both worms
exploited the same security hole, and the patch had been available for
weeks.

Microsoft is working hard to find ways of reducing the time between a patch
being available and most users getting it applied.
