TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I keep hearing these arguments from rabid folks on one side or the other
as if the only possible scenario is for the world to support a single
operating system monopoly. Why? There is room enough, and computing
chores enough, for several operating systems to exist. If there is one
you don't like, don't use it. I worked on proprietary systems on
mainframes and minis until the late 1980s, when I got involved with
UNIX. I now use Linux for all my work. I don't dislike Windows, it has
just never been relevant. I do everything I need with Linux today, but
things will certainly change and I will probably be using something else
in a few years. It could be Windows, I don't know.
There is nothing inherently evil about proprietary software nor open
source software. The two can co-exist nicely as long as the copyrights
are honored on both sides.
