I keep hearing these arguments from rabid folks on one side or the other as if the only possible scenario is for the world to support a single operating system monopoly. Why? There is room enough, and computing chores enough, for several operating systems to exist. If there is one you don't like, don't use it. I worked on proprietary systems on mainframes and minis until the late 1980s, when I got involved with UNIX. I now use Linux for all my work. I don't dislike Windows, it has just never been relevant. I do everything I need with Linux today, but things will certainly change and I will probably be using something else in a few years. It could be Windows, I don't know.

There is nothing inherently evil about proprietary software nor open source software. The two can co-exist nicely as long as the copyrights are honored on both sides.
