Sure. There are laws that prevent some actions. But basically, when it comes to
the job and expectations, the company (and the boss) gets to set those
expectations and rules. You can either obey them or challenge them. If you
challenge them, you run the risk of being handed your hat.

Yes. But employees also have ("set") certain expectations. And if you challenge them as an employer you run the risk of not getting an employee you'd like to have (or none at all).

The balance varies, of course. In a sweatshop stuffed with illegal immigrants, almost all power rests with the boss. When you own an NBA team and want to sign Shaq, on the other hand, you better be prepared to bend over backwards.

I assume that most tech writing jobs are somewhere in the middle between these extremes. (Although your worldview sometimes seems to tend more in the direction of the sweatshop :-)
