Per diem can work for you if you maintain two households in two
different, uncommutable, regions and if you are a contractor, not a
salaried employee.

Basically, up to a certain percentage of your hourly rate can be set
aside as per diem if the circumstances are right. That amount is not
subject to federal or state income tax. This is not an additional
payment on top of your hourly rate. It appears to reduce your hourly
rate, in fact, although it doesn't. It actually increases the amount you
take home. On the other hand, you are maintaining two households, so
your expenses are much greater.
