Why limit yourself to technical writing? There are scores of other writing
positions that don't have the word writer in the title but may serve as a
stepping stone to the much-desired tech writing job.

Search the job postings and online want ads with "writing" "writer" and
"written" as key words. You'll get a lot of garbage but you'll also turn up
some interesting opportunities that can get you going. Anything that puts
writing and/or communication skills at the top of the skills list warrants
your attention.

When I wanted to write professionally, I knew I didn't have the technical
background to jump into technical writing. (I had some freelance writing,
editing, and translating work on my resume, but not a whole lot.) Using the
above approach, however, I did find and get a job as a "marketing
communications specialist" at a software company. I did newsletters and
press releases but I also did a lot of news-clipping, trade
journal-scanning, Powerpoint presentations, and simple graphic design. My
latent, inner geek flourished in the tech environment and I soaked it up. A
couple of years later they had an opening for a tech writer and they let me
jump over.
