What kind of medical background would one need in order to break into
this field as a technical writer?

I have little-to-no medical background (other than putting my child through chemotherapy -- a real education!), yet am working as a tech writer in a biotech firm.

My latest learning has come from "Cartoon Guide to Genetics" and "Idiot's Guide to Decoding Your Genes." The names sound funny, but both are filled with useful information.
