Re: Linking to PDF destinations-poor man's help system
OK, no one decided to tackle my HTML to PDF destination question. In the meantime I found my answer here: http://www.rdpslides.com/psfaq/FAQ00050.htm
The example given there:
<a href=http://www.adobe.com/prodlist.pdf#namedest=Digital-Imaging>
is correct.
The shorthand form works equally well:
<a href=http://www.adobe.com/prodlist.pdf#Digital-Imaging>
But both work only when the PDF is stored on a web site.
Anyone know what kind of syntax one would use to call a named destination in a Windows environment?
The following document summarizes available ways to access a file stored locally:
How To: Mechanisms for Opening PDF's to Specific Pages
http://support.adobe.com/devsup/devsup.nsf/docs/51171.htm
All methods require plug-ins/code development, which will have to be
integrated into the distribution/installation procedures. They are platform-
dependent as well.
An alternative route which does not necessitate these methods is to split the
document set to smaller PDF chunks (eg chapters/sections), and open these
in response to pressing Help. A Mini TOC or buttons on the first page of these,
together with bookmarks or additional navigational devices will then enable
fast navigation to topic of interest.
