Framemaker 7 not ignoring whitespace during XML import

Framemaker 7 is not ignoring the spaces and carriage returns in my imported XML data. The import works well except that it brings in the spaces and carriage returns that should be ignored (and are ignored by IE).
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a setting I have overlooked? Read/write rules?
