David wonders how you can get paragraph marks along-side a table in MS Word.

Usually, by default, your table is set to have no text wrapping around it (sort of the equivalent of having top/bottom text wrapping around a picture).

But you can have text-wrapping around a table. To do this, click anywhere in the table, then from the Table (or right-click) menu, select Table Properties - you will see the setting on the tab for Table Properties (the other tabs are for Row or Cell).

If your table is less than the width of the page, this means that you can have text flowing around it. If you have empty paragraphs, you will just see their paragraph marks. If you have a really big table, it may extend over the page footer, giving you really weird (usually undesired) effects.
