Re: techwr-l digest: September 04, 2002
My father always told me that upon entering a new environment I should keep
my eyes and ears open and my big mouth shut.
Wise man.
Trouble is, I now understand
that to be called "lurking" and considered impolite.
Far from being impolite, it is almost required to avoid stepping on toes, irritating the current inhabitants, and risking complete and violent misunderstanding of your own posts. Yes, I'm joking a bit, but I really do recommend it for the first few weeks while you're exploring a new online community. Every group has its culture, its jargon, its requirements and taboos. Lurking is a relatively painless way to ease into a group.
After two months of
assiduous reading of the Newsletter, I now welcome the opportunity to say
hello on an upbeat note.
Hi!
First, it is a joy to read the Newsletter.
Newsletter? Oh, you must be on Digest. Many of us prefer to get individual messages, rather than the digest. I like to sort messages by subject, and read all the messages for a topic together.
It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
And yours. Welcome to the circus.
