Early contracting experiences? Learning the haard way! (1 of 2...)
Subject:Early contracting experiences? Learning the haard way! (1 of 2...) From:Charles E Vermette <cvermette -at- juno -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Sat, 31 Aug 2002 15:46:56 -0400
CV - <If I sense that a potential client doesn't know what they're doing
- or is simply disorganized and/or immature, I walk and don't look back.
AP- <This expresses an "I know better than they do" attitude. Which I
find very distasteful. The fact is not every work environment is
identical. If you have extremely fussy or explicit expectations in your
work environment, then you probably should avoid contracting all
together. Go find a nice big company where you can settle into a stable
grind for 25 years...>
I don't claim that "I know better than they do." I know myself, and make
choices about what works for me.
Granted: I may leave money on the table. I may not get as far out of my
"comfort zone" as I should. I also reevaluate my preferences and
decisions to make sure they're still valid. But I have a formula, it
works for me and a few clients, and I adapt it when necessary.
Part of the free market: the players can choose who they want to deal
with. No client/employer has to deal with me. The inverse is true as
well.
