Career Upgrade

I am new to the list and would like some advice on how to break into
different types of Technical Writing. I have worked as a Technical Writer
a little over three years doing basic hard copy procedural documentation
for a retail company and editing documents for the oil and gas industry
(gotta love Houston). I'm sure that I could stay in my current postion
indefinitely doing this, but I fear dying from boredom. What I really want
to do is work in the software industry, but the old chicken and egg
problem persists. How to get the job without the experience? I did work in
the IT department in my first job and could probably make that experience
sound like more than it actually was on a resume, but don't want to fall
on my face should I be offered a position based on exxagerated
information. I am willing to read anything, take any classes, go to any
lengths to improve my station, but I unsure of where to start. I'd really
appreciate advice from any and all.
