I haven't implemented this, but I've looked into it. I've found one product that will allow you to have multiple monitors (sort of). It's called the Appian Traveler. (http://www.appian.com/products/traveler.html) You can use your laptop monitor as one monitor, and an external monitor to display another desktop. It's also useful to display a Powerpoint presentation on one, and your notes on the other.

Other than that, I believe some laptops have the ability to do that sort of trick without the Traveler PCM card, but I don't know offhand what makes and models do this.
