I think you're right, but it's not a factor in my situation. I'm always
using a PS driver, whether printing from Frame, Word, Acrobat, EditPad,
or whatever. I don't even have a PCL driver installed.

I suspect it's not. I'd guess it's the time required to translate the PS
code into the equivalent PCL code.

And that's where our experiences differ. For me, the same PS printer
driver takes longer to print 30 pages from Acrobat than to print the
same 30 pages from Frame, Word, etc. With one printer, the difference is
slight, but with another, it's sizable.
It's a mystery...
