"every now and then"

Why not all the time if you are really working way more than 40 hours
per week?

I would agree, if you get comp time, there is no issue. If you get comp
time, you are not really working 80 hours a week, are you? You work 20
hours on the weekend to meet a deadline on Monday and take Tue, Wed, and
Thursday off. No problem. But, does that really happen? Not in my
experience.

The fact is, you work 80 hours per week and you get talked to if you
have many 2-hour lunches, come in at noon too often, etc.

The fact is, the job you agree to do is defined, in part, by a number of
hours to which you commit. That is, if the boss works you 60 hours at
technical writing and decides your job also includes 20 hours washing
his Ferrari every week, you'd have a problem with that, right? If you
agreed to an employment agreement that specifically lets your employer
work you up to 168 hours per week with only 40-hours worth of
compensation, then, I agree, you are up-the-creek.

The fact is, companies lay employees off and then expect the remainder
to make up the difference. Thus, if your employer lays off 2 of three
tech writers, is it okay for that employer to work you 120 hours per
week? Not in my book.

Cheers,

Sean

So, I can enjoy an extended lunch every now and then and can get way
more work done on the weekend without the interruption!
