It might be worth trying. For all that the HR person seemed open, an appearance of openess is occasionally nothing more. Sometimes, it can be a negotiating tactic.However, keep in mind that making the effort may brand you in the company's mind as someone who would be unlikely to stay for long.

Another thing to consider: when was the last time you looked for work? If you haven't looked around for a couple of years, you may want to see if the rates have dropped for your areas of expertise. Very probably they have. You should check out what similar jobs are offering before you do anything; if nothing else, you'll be better able to negotiate if you have a clear idea of the going rates.
