It all depends upon the company doing it. By the time I got an interview for my current job, I didn't even remember actually applying. It took probably a month before they finally made an offer, and another few weeks before I got the actual offer letter.

I relocated to Austin around Labor Day 2000, and about a month later I got a message on my machine from a company that I had interviewed with in May, asking me if I was still interested.

One month ago, I interviewed for a position at a university, and I was told
that I'd be contacted when a decision was made. I have yet to hear back,
and I'm wondering if it normally takes this much time to make a decision.
