The Acrobat conversion of very large Word files with many, many internal
links and graphics takes up most available system resources. Close all
other documents on the PC, shut down Outlook and the web browser, and
then start your conversion.

Also, try using PDFMaker instead of Distiller. You can make far more
precise settings, such as defining those Word styles used to create
bookmarks, for instance.

I can't tell what causes your problem with Heading 4 subheads without
taking a look at the document. Assuming everything is okay, it should
work. Nonetheless, the file may be just too complex and the memory
available insufficient, so that Distiller gets so far and then cannot
store more into memory, so it doesn't try. This may be indicated if you
get a Windows error stating that Word is out of memory and asking if you
want to go on without Undo.

I created a document for a major client not long ago that was over 25Mb
in size because of the graphics and internal links (using bookmarks I
set as well as headings). The client wanted to propagate the file across
their intranet, so I used Acrobat 4.05 to create a PDF file for them.
The conversion took all night each time I ran it. So, I waited until the
evening before I left to start the conversion. In the morning, the thing
was done.

I had some errors for awhile that bombed the conversion; I became a hero
by clearing them up by doing I don't know what--I just fiddled with the
Word file cleaning up first one thing, then another. Finally, it worked,
again.

Good luck!
