Joy,

Question is - is there such a thing as a "link sniffer" that can go through
a document folder and update or at least locate outdated links in
documents?

I've not heard of anything, but maybe you have. I have a mixture of both
Word and FrameMaker-to-PDF docs.

I highly recommend ARTS Link Checker (previously Ari's Link Checker from Dionis) - see http://www.aroundtablesolution.com/arts_link_checker.asp for details/demo version. It check links and/or other interactive features in PDFs (interactive or automated batch mode).

Rely on this tool as much as possible, but it does not replace human inspection. You may have valid links which point to mistaken destinations, valid links which have incorrect active area or inconsistent visual style. Even worse, some links may be missing altogether from the PDF for different reasons, and there is no way for the Link Checker to know that these should have been there.
